History of Bunkers del Carmel

Today, at the top of the Turó de la Rovira hill in Barcelona’s Carmel district, the remains of the anti-aircraft battery have been revitalised as a place of leisure.

What to see in the area around Bunkers del Carmel

Park Güell

Park Güell is a huge garden with peculiar architectural features created by the famous architect Antonio Gaudí. The park owes its name to Eusebi Güell, a wealthy businessman who was passionate about Gaudí’s work and was his main patron. Although the main idea was to build a luxury residential complex, over the years this idea was abandoned and a fairytale park was built in its place.

The park was opened in 1922 and since then it has become one of Barcelona’s main tourist attractions. In 1984 it was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Gaudí House Museum

The Gaudí House-Museum, where the artist lived from 1906 to 1925, is now home to a collection of furniture and objects designed by him and his collaborators. The house, located on the grounds of the Parc Güell, was built to exemplify Gaudí’s main projects when the park was originally conceived as a private housing estate.

Gaudí’s house keeps the artist’s memory alive thanks to the exhibition of furniture and different objects that he designed. The museum allows you to delve into the artist’s memory by visiting some of the rooms, such as his bedroom, or the studio where so many brilliant ideas were born over the course of twenty years.
