Ubigi review
5/5

eSIM cards are the best option to have internet connection when traveling abroad. So if you are about to embark on a trip, you have probably seen many options available on the market such as Ubigi and you are interested in reading the opinions of other users before buying. That is why we have prepared this Ubigi review to share our experience we’ve had with this brand.

At Passporter we have tested Ubigi eSIM cards along with other alternatives such as Holafly, Nomad and SimOptions in some destinations like Canada, and we want to share our experience and the advantages and disadvantages of Ubigi eSIM cards. We can tell you in advance that the brand is characterized by its App where you can install the eSIM and by its data plans for cars with internet.

If you want to know our opinion about Ubigi’s eSIM cards, carry on reading and we will share all the details you need to know about the brand.

Ubigi eSIM card features and evaluation

1. Ubigi review: eSIM speed and data limit

One of the biggest drawbacks of Ubigi’s eSIM cards is that they don’t have unlimited data plans like other brands such as Holafly, but instead all of their plans have a data limit ranging from 500MB to 200GB. This means that, if you haven’t calculated your connection needs for the trip properly, you’ll most likely run out of data and have to top up your eSIM and pay again.

Here is the table to help you make an estimate of the gigabytes you will need during your trip, although in Passporter we recommend you to get an eSIM card with unlimited data like the ones offered by Holafly.

PlataformGB consumption per hour
Instagram0,12 GB – 0,18 GB
Facebook0,12 GB – 0,18 GB
Twitter0,06 GB
Tiktok0,18 GB – 0,8 GB
Netflix0,3GB – 7GB
Youtube0,14 GB – 1,7 GB
Amazon Prime0,8 GB – 6GB
Internet traffic on video and social media platforms

2. Duration of Ubigi plans

On Ubigi’s website and App you can see data plans by country or continent for more than 190 destinations, with a duration of 1 day, 30 days or 12 months in some cases. They also offer unlimited duration plans, which are paid on a monthly basis, but the truth is that they have a limit of 2GB per month.

The Ubigi eSIMs are useful for long stays abroad, for study trips or digital nomads. However, for short trips, other brands that adapt to the duration of your trip, such as Holafly, are better.

3. Ubigi review: eSIM pricing

The prices of Ubigi eSIM cards vary greatly depending on country, contract length and gigabytes. 30-day contracts are priced between €8 (for 1Gb) and €29 (for 10GB). And 12-month plans cost €29 per month.

Ubigi is one of the most expensive brands on the market if we take into account that its plans do not offer unlimited data. However, it is true that their plans with little data are very economical if you don’t have to recharge again later.

4. Ubigi Review: Customer Support

Ubigi’s technical support is exclusively in English and works via email, which means that they tend to take a long time to respond. Both on their website and in their App you will find a form to fill in if need. On the website you can also consult their video tutorials and read answers to frequently asked questions to resolve your doubts.

5. Ability to share data

One of the advantages of Ubigi eSIM cards is that they allow data sharing with other devices. In your mobile settings you can configure your data plan to allow this option. Keep in mind that data is not unlimited and if multiple devices use the eSIM at the same time it will run out much faster.

6. Ubigi Review: their App

The Ubigi App works very well and from it you can buy, install and control the data consumption of your eSIM. It also offers the ability to recharge the card if you run out of data.

This is a plus for the brand as it greatly speeds up the purchase and installation process. In addition, the App itself will let you know if your phone is compatible with their eSIM cards when you download it.

7. Ubigi review: eSIM purchase and installation process

Ubigi is a slightly different eSIM card provider from the rest as first you have to install the card for free and then choose the data plan via the web or the App. These are the steps you have to follow to perform the installation and purchase:

  • Download their App at Apple Store, Play Store. On Ubigi’s website you will also find a QR code that you can scan to download it directly.
  • Create your account. It will only take you a minute as you only have to fill in 5 fields.
  • Install for free the eSIM card on your smartphone through the application, which will accompany you during the process to make it as easy as possible.
  • Purchase the data plan of your choice via the web or the App. If you purchase from the web you will need to register and enter your details. Once you have chosen your eSIM plan you will be able to pay securely with Apple Pay, Visa, MasterCard, Paypal, AMEX and Maestro.
  • The activation of the Ubigi eSIM card is done from the settings of your smartphone, in the “mobile data” section. There you can set it as primary network, secondary network or turn it off.

You should know that with Ubigi eSIM cards the contract duration starts to run from the purchase of the data package. That’s why we recommend you to buy the data plan just before leaving for your trip in a place where you have wifi. The advantage is that it will only take a second if you have already installed the eSIM beforehand and filled in your payment information.

8. Recharge Ubigi eSIM (if you run out of data)

The great thing about Ubigi eISM cards is that you can leave them installed in your smartphone and add data packs as they run out without having to reinstall another eSIM. From the app you will be able to control your spending of gigabytes and choose another plan as soon as the first one runs out. From the web you also have this option in the “Top Up” section.

This option is useful in case we run out of data on the trip, but in our opinion it is better to be safe than sorry. This is why we will always recommend unlimited data plans like the ones offered by Holafly.

What are the opinions of the Ubigi eSIM card on Trustpilot?

On Trustpilot, one of the most trusted sources of brand reviews, you can compare and read what users think about Ubigi eSIM cards. There you can see more than 2000 reviews about the brand, which has a pretty good score of 4.2. We at Passporter have made a compilation with some of these reviews to guide you when choosing an eSIM card.

Assuming the prices are more expensive than the ones of local operators, just for the time savings when you have to find a phone store when you arrive, it’s worth it. It is super simple, and works well. I got an esim 6h before going to Andorra, and was very happy. And yes, the esim only has data, no voice, so to make calls you have to use whatsapp, Skype, etc …

Superefren, Trustpilot

I couldn’t use my cell phone and still can’t. I have 2 lines paid for and can’t use it.

Rómulo mejia duran, Trustpilot

Everything very simple. You install the app. You select the package and pay. And it automatically installs the esim. It works perfectly.

Trustpilot customer

I was just one day in Spain and decided to use the service, really excellent, easy, practical and efficient.

Our opinion on Ubigi eSIMs

After testing Ubigi’s eSIM card in Canada and other destinations, we’ve reached several conclusions. Although the brand offers a wide variety of eSIMs for more than 100 countries and by continents or groups of countries, the truth is that the duration of the plans is so long that they are not worthwhile for short trips.

On the other hand, we also need unlimited data cards so we don’t have to worry about recharging our eSIM or running out of data mid-trip. That said, one point in its favor is that the App greatly simplifies the installation and recharging process.

As for price, it is one of the most expensive brands on the market, and while it does not offer plans with unlimited data, it has an above-average gigabyte limit.

Also, it is the only brand that offers eSIM cards for cars with internet. Some models of Jaguar, Fiat, Land Rover, Alfa Romeo or Jeep already incorporate this technology.

In short, Ubigi cards are easy to buy and install, but at Passporter we always recommend Holafly’s unlimited data cards for worry-free travel.

What alternatives exist to Ubigi eSIMs

If you are preparing for a trip and need to have internet connectivity, you have probably seen that there are several brands on the market that offer very similar eSIM solutions. Another advantages of Holafly is that the duration of the plans is very flexible and you can choose between 5, 10, 15, 20, 30, 60 and up to 90 days in most countries. 2. SimOptions and its wide range of eSIM cards

AdvantagesDisadvantages
-Some plans include calls and SMS.
-They offer regional, country or global data packages.
-They have eSIM cards for 160 countries.
-SimOptions eSIM cards are easy to purchase and install.
-No App to control data consumption.
-Gigabytes are limited to 20GB or less and they do not have cards with unlimited data.
-Not all eSIM cards allow recharging data.
-Support depends on each brand.
Advantages and disadvantages of SimOptions’ eSIM cards

The SimOptions online store is a marketplace where you will find a wide offer of packages for eSIM cards in more than 200 countries from different local companies. This means that the product is not standardized and the features of each plan can vary a lot depending on the brand, which makes the choice process difficult. We are focusing on features such as data sharing, technical support and price.

Data plan for Sim Options eSIM

Although their website is not as intuitive as Holafly’s or Airalo’s, the purchase process is still very straightforward. Once you’ve chosen your preferred data plan, you can finalize the purchase with these payment methods: Visa, Mastercard, PayPal, AMEX and Discover.

One issue with this brand is that its data plans are not very flexible. Although for each destination there are several options, the truth is that they tend to give little flexibility in terms of contract duration and gigabytes. In addition, data plans are more expensive compared to the brands mentioned above. But the worst thing is that SimOptions cannot ensure a quality customer service because it depends on each of the brands they work with.

3. Nomad y their App

VentajasDesventajas
– Quick and easy purchase and installation process.
-Your eSIM allows you to share data with other devices.
– Allows you to recharge the eSIM.
– Purchases and installation from the App.
– Gigabytes are limited to 20GB or less.
– They do not have unlimited data cards.
– Short-term plans have very limited gigabytes.
– Their eSIM cards do not include calls and sms.
– The duration of the plans is limited to 7 and 30 days.
– Its technical support is only in English.
– It is one of the most expensive brands in the market.
Advantages and disadvantages of Nomad eSIM cards

This company is dedicated to the sale of eSIM cards. It is also a marketplace like SimOptions, but its website and App are much better developed and it is a bit easier to compare between eSIM cards. One of the advantages of the brand is that it has an App with which its customers can easily and quickly sign up for data plans.

The brand offers data plans in more than 100 countries and also by continents so that we can make use of our internet connection even if we are moving between different countries.

The vast majority of this brand‘s eSIM plans have a duration of 7 or 30 days, which is not very flexible and you will most likely have days left over or short. Also, their plans have a data limit ranging from 1 GB to 20 GB, and they do not offer plans with unlimited data. The price range is wide and moves between €5 and €125

Their App is very useful for monitoring consumption and recharging in the event of running out of data. Through it we can also contact customer service, which unfortunately is only in English.

Which is our favorite eSIM card for our travels?

At Passporter we know that eSIM cards are the best option to have internet on our trips abroad, so we also know that choosing between one brand or another can be a time-consuming task. That’s why we have tested in our travels both Ubigi eSIM cards and those of many other brands such as Holafly, Airalo, or SimOptions and we want to tell you our experience to help you organize your trip.

Ubigi has the great advantage that it is the only brand of eSIM cards that can be installed in smart cars. In addition, its App makes the installation and purchase process very simple. The problem arises with the duration of the contracts and the gigabyte limit. The duration of the contracts is very inflexible: 1 day, 30 days or 12 months, which may not fit our trip. For us, one of the most important aspects when we travel is to be able to use the internet without worrying about running out of data. That’s why at Passporter we consider eSIM cards with unlimited data to be the best option when we travel. One company with unlimited data eSIM cards is Holafly, in whose online store you can also find a wide variety of data plans for many, many destinations.

Another advantage that Holafly has is that they offer a service of 24h technical support in English and other languages. In short, Ubigi cards are perfectly valid to have internet abroad, but if you want to go carefree, we recommend Holafly’s unlimited data eSIM cards.
