Neighbourhood of Pelourinho

The Pelourinho is the name by which the historic centre of Salvador da Bahia is known. It is the oldest part of the city and its Portuguese colonial houses prove it. The streets of the neighbourhood are full of colour thanks to the beautiful facades of the buildings and the cobblestones. One of the must-see sights in Pelourinho is the Church and Convent of San Francisco. This church is considered one of the seven wonders of the world of Portuguese origin. Its white and blue tiles, reminiscent of the churches of Porto, tell the story of the life of Saint Francis. But this church won’t be the only one you’ll find in Pelourinho, as this neighbourhood is full of them, and all are worth a visit.

Model Market

The Mercado Modelo, one of the most beautiful buildings in Salvador, in neoclassical style, is a handicraft market located in the district of Comercio, very close to the historic centre. It was inaugurated in 1912, but the building we know today is not the original one as it suffered several fires and after the 1969 fire it had to be rebuilt from scratch. It houses more than 200 little shops where you can find the best souvenirs of Salvador de Bahia. Opening hours: Mon-Sat: 9:00-18:00, Sun: 9:00-14:00.

Behind the market is also one of the emblems of the city: the Lacerda Elevator. It is a 72-metre public lift that connects the lower part of the city with the upper part and is one of the favourite stops for visitors, who can see Salvador from above. Opening hours: M-F: 6:00-23:00 and S-S: 7:00-22:00. The price is 0.15 reais, or 2 euro cents

Rio Vermelho Neighbourhood

This neighbourhood, considered the city’s bohemian quarter, is a favourite of many, and no wonder, as this is where much of Salvador’s nightlife and entertainment is concentrated. In its streets there are bars, restaurants, pubs and live music venues. Its streets seem to radiate a distinct and addictive energy that captures everyone who walks them. And if that wasn’t enough, this neighbourhood is also home to sun and sand beaches such as Praia do Buracão and Praia Rio Vermelho. With so many options and things to do, you’ll want to stay and spend a whole day soaking up the atmosphere of Rio Vermelho.

Barrio de Barra

This neighbourhood is one of the most pleasant to walk around in Salvador de Bahia. It is home to one of the city’s main attractions, the Farol da Barra, a lighthouse that you can climb and from which you can enjoy beautiful views of the coast. The area is also known for its beautiful and quiet beaches, such as Praia do Porto da Barra, from where you can watch the best sunsets in Salvador. Lighthouse opening hours: Mon-Sun: 9:00 to 18:00
