What are the best places to visit in Miravet?

1. The Miravet castle

The Castle is one of the most emblematic buildings of the town. It is the second largest Romanesque castle in Spain. It was built in the 12th century on top of a hill overlooking the Ebro River and its solid stone walls, defensive towers and parade ground are the remaining reminder of medieval times. The complex also has a church, the Iglesia de Santa María.

You can go to the castle on foot, it is only 15 minutes from the village, but you can also go by car. The entrance fee is 5€

2. Old Church of Miravet

On your visit to Miravet you can not miss the Old Church. It was built over a mosque in the 16th century, and after suffering extensive damage during the war it had to be restored. The church has been recognized as a Cultural Asset of Local Interest for its historical relevance and the Romanesque mural paintings and altar inside. Inside the church you will also see an exhibition of pottery and a Civil War photography exhibition.

3. La Sanaqueta viewpoint, the best views of Miravet

The viewpoint of La Sanaqueta is located in the old town, just behind the Old Church. It is the best place to appreciate the landscape that forms the meander of the Ebro River surrounding the village. We recommend that on your walk through the village you take a few minutes to enjoy the scenery.

4. Old town of Miravet

From the pier, next to the parking lot, you will reach the old town in 5 minutes on foot. In this area you will see all the charm of the town. And the distribution of the cobbled streets will show you the influence of the medieval period. On your way you will find emblematic buildings of the village such as the Old Mill, the Portal del Motxi or the  Palace of the Comendador.

5. The pier, the best place to take pictures in Miravet

Next to the Miravet parking you will find a small pier where the views of the village are a marvel. There you can perfectly appreciate how the stone houses built on the hill are reflected in the water. Early in the morning the river is covered with fog, but it dissolves throughout the day. Get your camera ready because you won’t be able to avoid taking a thousand photos.

6. Boat ride

In the past the only way to get to Miravet was by boat, and although nowadays it is possible to get there by car, there are still some of these traditional boats that will cross the meander for 3€ These boats are called “laudes” and you can also take a ride in them with your car.

What to see around Miravet

1. Siurana, the village on a cliff

Siurana is a small village located on top of a ridge surrounded by high cliffs that rise above a reservoir. As you can imagine, the views from the village are a real natural spectacle, there is nothing better to see in Siurana. In the village it is also worth walking around it and getting lost in the narrow streets that take us back to the Middle Ages. There you will discover a Romanesque church and the  remains of the castle of Walí Almira Alemoni, the last of the Taifa kingdom in Catalonia.

2. Tarragona, the capital of the province

Although Tarragona is not one of the most attractive cities of the autonomous community, the truth is that it also has some tourist attractions. Its history dates back to Roman times and as a result, the city is home to impressive archaeological remains, including a well-preserved Roman amphitheater and a medieval wall. Tarragona’s cathedral, which is characterized by its Gothic architecture, is also worth a visit, as is the old town, where you will discover beautiful squares. As you may have already noticed, there is not much to see in Miravet, so a couple of hours are more than enough to enjoy the views, stroll through the old town and visit the castle and the Old Church.

In Miravet you can eat at a good price in many restaurants. There you will taste typical dishes of the region such as arroz caldoso (rice), cocas, arrossejat (fish stew), clotxa (bread stuffed with vegetables and fish) or snail stews. These are some of the best restaurants in town:

How to get to Miravet?

The interior of Tarragona is not very well connected by public transport. This means that the best way to get around the area is by car, which you can rent in the provincial capitals or at the airport itself. Here we leave you some alternatives to get to Miravet:

  • Car: is the fastest and most comfortable option. From Tarragona it takes 50 minutes and from Barcelona almost 2h.
  • Public transport: if you prefer to use public transport, you can take a train to the station of Móra la Nova, which is approximately 17 km from Miravet. From there, you can take a cab or use the bus service to reach the village
  • Boat: an interesting option is to book a cruise that will take you around the main towns on the Ebro riviera
