Alcazaba de Almería

The Alcazaba of Almería is one of the top places to see in Almería for travellers and locals alike. This imposing structure was built around the 10th century, during the height of Al-Andalus’ splendour.

Located on the top of the hill that crowns the city of Almería, this fortress is divided into three parts; while the first two date back to the Muslim period, the third was built after the Christian conquest. It was a military fortress up until the 19th century. See the Canteras Califales in Almería

The Canteras Califales are one of the best viewpoints in Almería, a great place to visit if you are travelling with children. Located in the neighbourhood of La Chanca-Pescadería, this monument has been declared an Asset of Cultural Interest.

What to eat in Almería?

Almería has incredible food. Here are some of the dishes that you must try on your trip to the province.

  • First of all, we recommend you try the Bullabesa soup from Almería. This broth is prepared with fish and seafood, and you can add vegetables (onion, carrot, pepper and mayonnaise).
  • Secondly, we recommend the Gurullos with rabbit. As its name suggests, this dish is a stew made with rabbit and gurullos, a type of pasta that looks like long rice. Fried onion, tomato and garlic are added along with olive oil.
  • Next, you must try the Tabernero, one of the most famous tapas in Almería. It is a mixture similar to ratatouille, with pork, green and red peppers, onion and tomato. It is served on a piece of toasted bread.
  • Finally, we recommend the famous Migas de Almería. They are made with flour, and green peppers, meat or fish, olive oil and salt are added.

When is the best time to travel to Almería?

Being in the south of Spain, Almería enjoys mild temperatures during the winter and hot temperatures during the summer.

Depending on your interests, it will be better to travel at one time or another. If you want to enjoy the coast and its beaches, the best months are from June to September, although you should bear in mind that there will be a greater influx of travellers.
