What to see in Albacete
Cathedral of San Juan Bautista in Albacete Spain
The Cathedral of San Juan Bautista is one of the most iconic buildings in the city. Dating back to the 1515, it was built on the site of an earlier church. The cathedral was not completed until the 20th century, so the mixture of styles is very significant. The building is Gothic but has many details transitioning to Baroque.
Inside there are three naves ending in an apse, Baroque vaults and majestic columns, which give way to the chapel of the Virgen de Los Llanos (patron saint of the city) with a Renaissance altarpiece in the apse.
Casa del Hortelano and Cuchilleria Museum
Next to the Cathedral is the Casa de Hortelano, built in 1912. It stands out for its eclectic style green façade, now home to the Museum of Cutlery. This early 20th century building is a reflection of architectural modernism in the city.
This museum aims to keep the cutlery industry alive, by means of a journey through time, retracing its origins in the city and demonstrating its craftsmanship.
Passage of Lodares
This is an authentic architectural monument if ever there was one, linking the streets Mayor and Tinte. It was designed by Buenaventura Ferrando Castell in 1925. It is both a commercial and residential modernist gallery. The Pasaje de Lodares in Albacete and the Pasaje Gutiérrez in Valladolid are the only two remaining examples of this type of gallery in Spain.
Plaza del Altozano in Abacete Spain
It is the origin of the city centre and where we can find the Municipal Museum, the Gran Hotel, the Palace of Justice, the Film Library and the Bank of Spain. In addition, in the centre of the square are the Altozano gardens, the city? oldest gardens, created in 1843. There is also the Monumento al Cuchillero (Monument to the Cutler), a reference to the cutlery industry in Albacete.
Circo Theatre
It was inaugurated on 7 September 1887 and was built following the same typology of circus theatres that were built during the second half of the 19th century in Europe. Its last major refurbishment was in 2002, so Albacete now offers a unique building with its characteristics intact. It is the only one in Spain and is a Site of Cultural Interest.
