History of the Casa Mila
The Casa Milà, also known as La Pedrera, is one of the most recognisable places in Barcelona, as well as one of the most important works by the famous architect Antoni Gaudí.
This building was initially commissioned by the Milà family, who wanted to occupy the main floor and be able to rent out the rest of the flat. During the first years, many tenants passed through the house, as well as various famous people such as the Abadal family, the consul of the Argentine Republic Alberto I Gache and the Baladia family.
This house, which covers an area of 2,000 square metres, was built on a plot of land where there used to be a tower with a garden. It has three façades, each one facing a different side of the street. It has 150 windows and more than 30 balconies.
This was Gaudí’s last work before he concentrated fully on the construction of the Sagrada Família, and its construction lasted from 1906 to 1910.
