Leonora Carrington Museum

During your trip to Xilitla don’t miss this incredible museum, where works and sculptures of the artist Carrington are exhibited. They are based on the surrealist movement. Former Convent of San Agustin

Come and visit the oldest colonial building in Xilitla. It has a façade that generates curiosity and invites you to get to know its interior. Here you can visit the roof, the main nave and the cloister, which are parts of the former convent that houses the history of Xilitla. Nowadays it has been remodelled due to deterioration caused by the constant attacks by the Chichimecas in those times.

Due to its central location in Xilitla, you can go up to the rooftop and contemplate a panoramic view of this magical town. As if that wasn’t enough, you can come on Sundays and enjoy the Huapangueada. This is a traditional dance that takes place in front of the ex-convent in the main square.

Los Comales Xilitla Waterfall

The Comales Waterfall is a must for your stay in Xilitla as it guarantees you a day like no other, surrounded by nature, full of vegetation and the sounds generated by its enormous waterfall, it is ideal to submerge yourself in its cold and clean water. It consists of an abyss with a diameter of 60 metres and a vertical height of 376 metres. But its depth reaches 512 metres. In this place it is recommended to get up early, because you have to descend approximately 500 steps to get to the outskirts of the cave. Also, you have to be able to see the spectacle of the countless swallows that wake up around 8:00 a.m.

Surrealist Garden “Edward James”, Xilitla S.L.P.

This wonderful garden, was created by Edward James who besides being a millionaire was very close to authors of surrealism such as Dalí, Bretón, Leonora Carrington etc.. Of which he was a patron. In addition to the beautiful views, there is also a waterfall called “The General”.

The constructions you find here are inspired by nature, some of them are more beautiful than functional. Besides this magnificent place, you can also find a museum of Leonora Carrington.

How to get to Xilitla Mexico?

The way you get to this magical, but somewhat remote town, depends a lot on the part of Mexico where you are, as Xilitla does not have an airport or any direct way to access it, the most common way to get to this wonderful town, is through Queretaro airport and from there take a taxi to get there.

How to get to Xilitla from Mexico City?

The easiest way to get to Xilitla from Mexico City is by car, taking the road to Ixmiquilpan and from there to Tamazunchale and finally to Xilitla, which takes about 8 hours, but it is the cheapest way to do it.

If you are looking for a more direct way, you can take a bus with the route Mexico-Zimapan-Valles of the Flecha Roja line. There you will be asked to buy a ticket to the “i griega de Xilitla”. Once you get to the crossroads, you must get off and take a bus to Vencedor that goes directly through Xilitla and get off here. The trip usually takes 9 to 10 hours.

Once in Queretaro, you can get to Xilitla by land by taxi or bus, as it is the closest city to this magical town.
