Saint Agatha’s Tower
Also known as the Red Tower, St Agatha’s Tower is an imposing building that is distinctive not only for its size but also for its striking red facade. The tower was built in 1649 to defend the straits of Comino and Gozo against Ottoman attacks.
In addition to its beautiful exterior, we recommend going inside and visiting its small chapel. Afterwards, climb to the top of the tower to enjoy breathtaking views of the sea. When you’ve finished your visit, you’ll be able to walk along the cliffs a short distance away and explore the surrounding area. Don’t hesitate to visit this beautiful tower, which costs just €2 to enter.
Mellieha Bay
Mellieha Bay is considered the most attractive and largest beach on the island. Thanks to the comfort offered by its shallow waters, this beach is one of the main places to visit in Mellieha Malta, either for a nice swim or just a pleasant stroll.
You can enjoy a great morning or afternoon relaxing on the long sandy beaches and swimming in the crystal-clear waters. In this impressive nature reserve you can find a refuge for migratory birds and see more than 140 species. Along the way, you will discover the abundant local flora and fauna, which are fully protected. Depending on the time of year you visit the reserve, you will be able to enjoy one type of landscape or another, as well as the presence of different species. It is the ideal place to fully immerse yourself in nature and enjoy a good hike through its 7 hectares. And if that wasn’t enough, admission is completely free!
The Sanctuary of Our Lady of Mellieha
The Sanctuary of Our Lady of Mellieha is an impressive parish church that is undoubtedly one of the most impressive and beautiful sights to see in Malta. This gigantic religious building has a distinctive baroque facade that is a sight to behold.
Construction began in 1883, but was not completed until 14 years later, and only because of impressive volunteer work. It is made up of five large bells that were imported from Milan, and a striking dome. You can enter and admire the beautiful ornamentation, as well as many paintings by the famous Maltese painter Giuseppe Cali. Once you’ve finished your visit, don’t forget to take a photo from afar to get a stunning picture of the church with the sea in the background. Totally postcard worthy.
Popeye’s village
Located in Anchor Bay, Popeye’s Village is a beautiful destination just a short drive from Mellieha and definitely worth a visit. This pleasant spot is characterised by its coastal location and a pretty colourful wooden cottages.
The origin of this village is due to a Robin Williams film, built as a set for the movie. It is a spectacular place full of attractions worth visiting, as well as numerous shows and activities for children, such as bouncy castles and boat rides. You can recognise many scenes from the Popeye films in its streets and houses, as well as enjoying several theatrical performances and an interesting 15-minute documentary on the set of the film.

Air Raid Shelter, Mellieha Malta
Another place not to be missed on your visit is the impressive bunker at Mellieha, one of the largest on the island of Malta. You can enjoy a very interesting tour of its interior with detailed explanations from a man who lived there during the war.
Inside you can learn more about the terror that the inhabitants experienced during that dark period when they were constantly bombed. You can walk through up to 500 metres of corridors while looking at recreations and figures that are a little scary but also impressive. You will also find small rooms with recreations of the life of the people who were in the shelter at that time. This is without a doubt a unique and intense experience during your visit to this impressive bunker.

During the winter season, the Tower of St. Agatha is open from Monday to Friday from 10.00 am to 4.00 pm, while in summer it is open from Monday to Friday from 10.00 am to 5.00 pm.
The best time to travel to Mellieha Malta is from April to June or September to October, as not only will you avoid the crowded summer months, but you can also enjoy more moderate temperatures and avoid the excessive heat.
Popeye’s Village is only a 6-minute drive from Mellieha, so getting there is quite easy and quick. The most convenient option is by car, taking the Triq tal-Prajjet road and driving for approximately 2 kilometres.
If you choose to take the bus instead, you will have to take the 222 from Mellieha, wait 10 stops and get off at Ghadira. Once there, you’ll need to change buses and catch the 101 to Popeye’s Village.
Another option is to walk, which takes around 30 minutes from the centre of Mellieha.
