What to do on your trip to the Dominican Republic?

Santo Domingo

Without a doubt, one of the first things to do in the Dominican Republic is to visit its spectacular capital. As you’d expect, Santo Domingo is the largest city in the country, which offers a wide variety of activities and places to see.

You can take a tour around the city to discover some of its most iconic spots, such as the Parque Colón, which is a large square where you can see several buildings and monuments of great historical value.

We recommend continuing on to the Catedral Primada de América, as it was the first religious building to be built on the entire continent. You will be able to admire the mixture of Gothic and Renaissance architecture and ornamentation. It is a visual spectacle.

Next, you can pay a visit to the Plaza de España, located in front of the famous Alcázar de Colón. As it is a very lively area where you can enjoy a unique atmosphere and even stop for a bite to eat in some of the many bars and restaurants. You’ll love it!

Finally, when you feel like taking a break from the city, we suggest a trip to Los Tres Ojos National Park. It is located very close to the city, and is a truly impressive natural setting. There you can visit a spectacular cavern by the lake where you can take a dip. If you want to know all the details about the capital, don’t hesitate to read our post: Things to in Santo Domingo.

Saona Island

There is plenty to see and do on Saona Island, a small island that is one of the most visited spots in Punta Cana. This small tropical paradise offers some of the most beautiful beaches and natural scenery in the country, so it is not a place you want to miss.

First of all, we recommend visiting the small village of Mano Juan, probably the only inhabited spot on the island. You’ll find a small fishing village and wooden houses that will charm you. And all this is right on the beach.

Another natural site you can miss on Saona Island is the impressive Cotubanamá Cave. It is located close to the famous Laguna de los Flamencos, where you can find the remains of an ancient indigenous civilisation. Don’t miss out!

Finally, we suggest diving in the Caballo Blanco Reef, where you can see an infinite number of marine and plant species that hide under these crystal clear waters. And, if snorkelling isn’t your thing, you can always take a boat tour and cruise through the mangroves.

San Pedro de Macorís

San Pedro de Macorís is on the shores of the Caribbean Sea, offering a wealth of stunning beaches and water activities. However, here you can enjoy much more than just the sand and the sea, as it has large natural spaces away from the coast.

First of all, we recommend you to visit the interesting Centro Histórico: Ron Barceló. Visiting this museum is one of the best things to do in the Dominican Republic. There you can learn about the production of the famous Dominican rum, one of the country’s most culturally important products. At the end of the visit, you can taste several samples.

You can’t miss the Cueva de las Maravillas, one of the most beautiful and most visited natural spots in San Pedro de Macorís. Inside you will discover a series of cave paintings that are thousands of years old, as well as natural rock formations that will leave you totally amazed.

Finally, we suggest visiting the small town of Juan Dolío, located just 16 kilometres from the city. It is the ideal place to enjoy the crystal-clear waters and stroll around its many craft shops. It is truly charming!
