Tigre, the Venice of Argentina, is a beautiful and welcoming city in the province of Buenos Aires. It is only about 30 kilometres from the capital and is the perfect day or weekend getaway. Places to see in Tigre, Argentina

1. Fruit Market

The Fruit Market is one of the liveliest places to walk through in Tigre. Until the mid 20th century, fruit from the Paraná Delta used to arrive at a small wharf here to to go on to be sold in Buenos Aires. A market was created next to the wharf to sell some of this fruit, hence where it gets its name. Nowadays, although it still bears the same name, it has become a craft and decoration market with local food restaurants, fastfood and a small Chinatown. It is the ideal place to stroll around, buy unique souvenirs and stay for lunch.

Opening times: daily from 9:00 to 19:00.

2. Tigre Art Museum of Argentina

This museum, opened in 1912, is one of the most acclaimed visits in the city of Tigre. It was built as the headquarters of the Tigre Club and to promote social and sporting recreation with regattas and tennis matches. It fulfilled its function until 1974, when the building was expropriated from the club and, in 1979, it was declared of National Historical Interest for its distinctive architectural values. Finally, in 2006, the Museo de Arte de Tigre, Argentina was inaugurated. Its interior is as interesting as its exterior as it has a beautiful collection mainly with works by Argentinean artists from the 19th and 20th centuries.

Opening times: Wednesday to Sunday from 1pm to 6pm. Monday and Tuesday: closed.

Entry Fees: General admission $20 (€0.17). Free for: Tigre residents, children under 12 years of age and senior citizens on Wednesdays.

3. Paseo Victorica

The Paseo Victorica, one of the main attractions of Tigre, Argentina, is a beautiful and quiet waterfront promenade full of places to eat or sit and have a drink and enjoy the views. Here, you can also find most of the nautical clubs where you can book river activities, such as kayaking routes.

4. Naval Museum

On Paseo Victorica itself, you will find one of the essential things to visit in Tigre. This is the Naval Museum where, in addition to maps, model ships and navigation tools, you can visit the Legh II, the ship in which Vito Dumas sailed around the world between 1942 and 1943. The Naval Museum in Tigre, Argentina, is a must on the itinerary of any sailing enthusiast.

5. Visit the islands of Tigre

One of the most common activities for the inhabitants of some of the islands of Tigre is to take one of the boat-collectivos that connect the city’s mainland to their homes. However, for tourists it is one of the essential leisure activities to do in Tigre. On this lovely boat trip you can observe the beauty of the river, the island houses and the lush vegetation, which is striking because it is so close to the city. The different boat companies have their own schedules, but they all leave quite frequently from the Estación Fluvial (<1€). 6. Boulevard Saenz Peña, the hipster area of Tigre, Argentina

Boulevard Saenz Peña is Tigre’s fashionable street. Here, as well as picturesque colourful buildings, you can find art galleries, street art murals, and trendy restaurants and bars. It is a must-see area of Tigre if you are passionate about art, photography and design.

Just 30 kilometres from Tigre is Buenos Aires, the capital of Argentina. As a cosmopolitan city, Buenos Aires has a vibrant and energetic atmosphere, with interesting and contrasting neighbourhoods that have their own identity. Must-sees in the capital include Plaza de Mayo, the oldest and most important public square in the city; La Boca, a colourful and lively neighbourhood; Barrio Recoleta and Puerto Madero among many others.

What to do in Tigre in one day?

Tigre is a small city that allows its visitors to get to know it in just one day. We suggest the following route:

  • Parque de la Costa
  • Casino
  • Fruit Market
  • Cross the Tigre River
  • Walk along Paseo Victorica
  • Tigre Art Museum

A good option to make sure you don’t miss any interesting places is to take the tourist bus that runs through Tigre. It has 11 stops where you can get off and get back on whenever and wherever you want. The journey takes 50 minutes without stops, but if you make the most of it, it can last all day. Of course, it shows all the places mentioned above, plus interesting spots such as the Naval Museum, the Museum of Mars and the Renaissance Museum among others.

Where to eat in Tigre, Argentina?

  • Canta el Gallo: This steakhouse is considered the best restaurant in Tigre by many tourists and locals alike. It has top quality meats and an excellent wine list for a price range of 7 to 17€.
  • Gato Blanco: A beautiful steakhouse overlooking a garden and the Tigre Delta. Gato Blanco serves the best meats for an average price per person of 1500$ ARP (13€).
  • El Galpón de Tacuara: A nice restaurant with quality fast food and craft beers. Price of hamburgers: approx. 800$ ARP (8€) Price of a pint of beer: 85$ (0.74€)
  • María Luján Ristorante: A Mediterranean-style restaurant with delicious fresh pasta dishes, as well as seafood and traditional Argentinian dishes such as empanadas. Price range: 600-1725$ ARP (5-15€)

How to get to Tigre from Buenos Aires?

Tigre is only 30 kilometres from the capital of Argentina, so the journey is very quick. There are several ways to get from Buenos Aires to Tigre:

  • MITRE Train: It is the fastest and cheapest way to get to Tigre. From Retiro train station, in Buenos Aires, you can take the Tren MITRE Ramal Tigre which takes 54 minutes. There are departures every 15 minutes. The timetable is from Monday to Friday from 6:08 to 22:08 and weekends and holidays from 6:50 to 22:24. The fare is 37$ ARP (0,32€) and 18,5$ (0,16€) with the SUBE transport card.
  • Coastal train: This is a train that, as its name suggests, runs along the coast of Buenos Aires and passes through the municipalities of Vicente López, San Isidro, San Fernando and Tigre. The route is longer than the previous one, but also much more beautiful. The timetable is from Monday to Friday from 6:50 to 20:50 and weekends and holidays from 8:20 to 21:20. The prices are the same as the previous train and there is the option of buying a daily ticket that allows you to get on and off the train as many times as you like.
  • Bus: Bus number 60 also takes you to Tigre. There are stops in different parts of the city, the first stop is at Plaza de la Constitución. The journey takes approximately 1:35 hours and costs 50$ ARP (0.43€).
  • Car: The journey by car takes 41 minutes on the Autopista del Sol (Panamericana Acceso Norte).

Tips for your trip to Tigre

  • Exchange your money into Argentinean pesos beforehand. Currency exchanges at airports are very expensive.
  • Always carry cash. Not all shops accept credit cards.
  • Have the address of the place you are staying written down, they will ask you for it at the airport.
  • Be careful with your personal belongings in tourist areas.
  • Travel in low season (July and August) if you want to get cheaper prices.
  • Travel in January, February and December for better temperatures.
  • Take out insurance before you travel to Argentina, as private health care costs are very high.
  • Plugs in Argentina have three flat pins, so you’ll need an adaptor to use electrical appliances.
