Cocibolca covers more than 8,000 km² and is the largest lake in Central America. Facing Granada, hundreds of small islets appear, covered in vegetation, separated by calm channels, with the Mombacho volcano dominating the horizon.

Although it’s often said that they were formed by an eruption, the geological explanation is more precise. Studies on Mombacho link the islets to a huge debris avalanche caused by the collapse of one of its flanks. In this guide, you’ll find what to see, how to explore them, and even tips for making your reservation.

<div id="ez-toc-container" class="ez-toc-v2_0_86 counter-hierarchy are the Isletas de Granada?

The Isletas de Granada are an archipelago located next to the Asese peninsula, southeast of Granada. There are around 365 islets, one for every day of the year.

So don’t expect to visit all 365 during a single excursion. Tours move through part of the archipelago and select several spots that are more well-known. That’s why the route lets you navigate between channels, watch birds, get close to Monkey Island, and pass by small tourist facilities.

What’s their origin? Well, it’s actually related to Mombacho. Upon investigation, deposits from a huge debris avalanche originating from the volcano were identified in this area. The material moved toward the lake and left the fragmented terrain that today forms the Asese peninsula and the islets.

They’re also very different from one another. Some barely have room for trees and birds, while others are occupied by homes, as well as hotels, restaurants, or vacation houses. But there are also small islands with no visible buildings and others turned into private properties, so the visit is mainly done from the water.

Looking around, the vegetation and channels make the Isletas de Granada a great place for bird-watching. The archipelago is home to both native and migratory species. So, if your priority is wildlife, ask about an early tour or a kayak trip.

What to see and do in the Isletas de Granada?

A tour of the Isletas de Granada doesn’t consist of continuously disembarking on each one. In this case, part of the experience lies in sailing and enjoying the moment. You can look at Mombacho from the lake and understand how, in this area, both nature and small infrastructure coexist among the islets.

Monkey Island in the Isletas de Granada

Monkey Island is one of the best-known stops. Boats usually get close to the shore to try to spot the primates among the trees. But there’s no guarantee they’ll be visible.

Although the experience goes further, and some tours encourage visitors to give them fruit, it’s better to observe them without touching or feeding them. What you can bring are small binoculars to enhance the experience.

Is it worth it? Yes, if it’s already part of the route. What we recommend is not choosing a tour just for this island. Because the value of the Isletas de Granada lies in the whole experience. That is, in the channels, in watching the birds, and also in the views of Mombacho.

Private islands and mansions

During the trip, you’ll see options such as islets with large houses, as well as gardens, private docks, and lodgings. Some belong to individuals, while others operate as hotels or tourist spaces.

Remember that not all private islets can be visited. Normally the boat passes by them, but if you want to disembark to eat or spend a few hours, it’s best to book a tour that includes a stop with a day pass.

As you can see, there are so many options that it’s worth choosing a guided tour rather than settling for a simple boat transfer.

San Pablo Fortress

The San Pablo Fortress is located on Castillo Island and is one of the historic stops on the route. It was built during the colonial period to reinforce Granada’s defenses against incursions that arrived by way of the lake.

Some tours allow you to disembark and explore it, while others only show it from the boat.

While you’re at this point, it’s also worth looking toward Mombacho. The combination of the lake, its vegetation, and defensive architecture helps explain why this area protected access to Granada from Cocibolca.

What are the boat and kayak tours through the Isletas de Granada like?

The simplest way to explore the Isletas de Granada is with a boat with a driver or guide. Short tours last around an hour. Of course, if you want to enjoy everything at a more relaxed pace, then two- or three-hour excursions are best.

If we have several options to choose from, prices will vary too. There are some shared departures from C$60 per person from the Tourist Center or Puerto Asese. On the other hand, private tours of about two hours can exceed 50 US$ per person.

Of course, these figures are always just a guideline, since details like duration, number of passengers, or included stops and entrance fees change the final price.

Kayaking offers a different experience. As we mentioned, guided tours usually last between two and three hours and allow you to enter narrow channels. It’s an interesting option for bird-watching and enjoying the scenery with less noise, although it requires paddling under heat and humidity.

Kayak excursions with pickup can run around 70-75 US$ per person. But don’t worry, since there are also cheaper local options.

To book with complete confidence, do it with a well-known operator and avoid street intermediaries if you can’t verify who will actually provide the service. If you want to visit San Pablo, eat on an island, or watch the sunset, say so beforehand. Some options include transfer from Marina Cocibolca. It’s a good alternative if you want to eat and spend several hours in a quiet setting. Remember that reservations are required to enjoy their dining experiences.

Restaurant El Pirata: located in El Encanto, within the isletas area. It lets you combine food with lake views and offers Nicaraguan cuisine and fish. Confirm boat access and hours beforehand.

La Bella del Mar Granada: this works as a boat experience with food and drinks on board, rather than as a fixed restaurant. It’s a great idea if you’re looking for a more social outing. That said, its departures are limited, so it’s best to book before heading out.

Of course, that’s not all, since more and more tours are offering other stops to eat. Because Nicaraguan food combines tradition and flavors that are well worth spending time on.

How to get to the Isletas de Granada from downtown?

Getting to the Isletas de Granada from downtown is easy, since boats don’t leave from Parque Central, but from several docks located next to the lake, about 15 minutes from the colonial area.

The main departure points are the dock at Granada’s Tourist Center, in the Los Chilamates area; the Cabaña Amarilla; and Puerto Asese. The latter is one of the usual docks for tours that head into the channels among the islets.

From Parque Central, you can take a taxi and ask directly to be taken to the dock indicated by your operator. You can also do this from the bus terminals if you arrive in Granada from another city. Remember that not all tours depart from the same place, so confirm the exact spot before heading out.

If you haven’t booked your excursion yet, you can head to the Granada Tourist Center or Puerto Asese, where boats operate to tour the islets.

What should you keep in mind before visiting the Isletas de Granada?

A tour of the Isletas de Granada is simple, but you’ll spend quite a bit of time on the water with direct sun exposure. That’s why it’s worth preparing a few things before setting off, to make the experience more comfortable.

Sun protection: bring high-protection sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat. Even boats with a roof leave exposed areas when the sun’s position changes.

Water and light clothing: heat and humidity are especially noticeable in a kayak. Bring a water bottle and light clothing that can get wet.

Cash: carry córdobas in small bills for drinks, entrance fees, or expenses where card payment isn’t guaranteed. If you inform yourself well before heading out, you might be able to bring just enough.

Identifiable operators: book at the dock, with your accommodation, or through a well-known company. Ask for the name of the person in charge and keep the contact information until you’re done.

Life jackets: check that there’s a suitable one for each passenger. If you’re traveling with children, ask beforehand about the sizes available.

Closed route: confirm whether you’ll visit Monkey Island, San Pablo, or a restaurant. You’ll get an especially beautiful light for photographing Mombacho and avoid some of the midday heat. Do you like birds? Then the early hours can also be interesting for watching them.

How to plan your visit to the Isletas de Granada with Passporter?

To organize your visit to the Isletas de Granada, first book two to three hours for the excursion. With Passporter, your travel organizer, you can save the departure dock, the tour time, the operator’s contact, and the rest of your bookings for that day.

A practical option is to do the tour in the morning, while there’s still plenty of the day left. Afterward, you can head back to downtown Granada to eat and continue on foot through Parque Central, the Cathedral, the San Francisco Convent, and Calle La Calzada.

If you’d rather sail at sunset, then reverse the order. Spend the morning in the historic center and head to the dock after eating. Always leave time to arrive early, especially if your boat departs from Puerto Asese or another dock farther from downtown.

If, after Granada, you continue toward the Pacific, you can also check out our guide on things to do on a trip to San Juan del Sur. That way you can combine the islets with a few days at the beach.

With Passporter, you can bring these places together in the same itinerary and organize each stop by day. Also remember to save the exact address of the dock and the tour confirmation. That way, you’ll avoid wasting time looking for where to leave from when it’s time to explore the islets. If you want to book trips like this one, don’t leave it until the last minute.

Frequently asked questions about the Isletas de Granada

How many Isletas de Granada are there?
The most widely used tourist figure is 365 Isletas de Granada, although it’s true that other sources don’t mention an exact number and instead speak of more than 360.
