Namib Desert?

The Namib Desert is a vast, arid region of Namibia whose name literally means “a vast place with nothing.” That description fits perfectly this great sea of sand, which covers no less than 80,000 square kilometers.

Where it is located

The Namib Desert lies mainly in Namibia, the country it gives its name to. However, its edges touch southern Angola and northern South Africa. It stretches along the entire coastal strip of the country, forming an elongated band roughly 2,000 kilometers long and between 50 and 160 kilometers wide. A large part of this coastline is protected and forms part of Namib-Naukluft National Park.

The oldest desert in the world

The Namib holds a fascinating geological record: it’s considered the oldest desert on the planet, with an estimated age of between 55 and 80 million years. While other deserts around the world, such as the Sahara, are relatively young, the Namib has remained under arid or semi-arid conditions continuously since the age of the dinosaurs.

A unique ecosystem between the ocean and the dunes

Beyond its age, what makes the Namib Desert truly extraordinary is its geographic location. The red dunes of this desert meet the Atlantic Ocean, creating a unique ecological phenomenon.

On one hand, there’s the Benguela current, formed by the contact between the ocean’s icy waters and the desert’s warm air. This produces a dense sea fog that rolls miles and miles inland every morning.

This fog is the only source of moisture the region receives, and thanks to it, certain endemic plant and animal species can survive in the Namib, having learned to capture the droplets suspended in the air without needing rain.

What to see in the Namib Desert

Namib-Naukluft National Park is home to the greatest treasures of the Namib Desert (as we mentioned, the park lies within the desert itself). Big Daddy stands an impressive 325 meters tall, and climbing it is quite a physical challenge. Still, if you’re up for it, here at Passporter, your trip planner, we recommend giving it a go, since the reward is seeing Deadvlei from a bird’s-eye view.

Big Mama sits right in front of Sossusvlei, and it’s best visited during the early morning hours.

Hiddenvlei

Translated as “hidden marsh,” this valley is the most overlooked in the park because it requires a 4-kilometer round-trip hike over soft sand. Even so, it’s the place that best offers that authentic, solitary desert experience, away from the crowds found at the other points of interest.

Sesriem Canyon

It’s an impressive natural crack carved into the rock by the force the Tsauchab River has exerted over millions of years. It stretches a total of two kilometers in length and reaches up to 30 meters in depth.

It’s the perfect place to visit during the middle of the day, when the desert’s dunes and valleys are off-limits due to the intense sun.

Sossusvlei: the great icon of the Namib

What is Sossusvlei

This chalky clay valley is surrounded by colossal red sand dunes. It’s, of course, a must on any trip through the Namib Desert. Its name roughly translates to “the dead-end marsh,” which makes a lot of sense, since it marks the exact spot where the Tsauchab River loses its force and gets blocked by the dunes, preventing its waters from reaching the Atlantic Ocean.

How its dunes were formed

The Sossusvlei landscape is the result of a geological process spanning millions of years that’s still active today. The sand originates from the Orange River, which carried sediment and quartz grains from deep inland all the way to the Atlantic. At the same time, the Benguela sea current pushed that sand northward and deposited it back onto the Namibian coast.

Strong winds also play their part. They blow in from the east and south, pushing the sand further inland, piling it up and forming the colossal formations we see today.

As for the orange-red color that characterizes the dunes, it’s caused by the oxidation of iron fragments present in the quartz grains. Here’s a neat trick: the older the dune, the longer it’s been exposed to the air, and the more intense its red color.

What to do during your visit

Once you arrive at Sossusvlei, you can walk among its living acacia trees and stroll beneath their shade. These trees extend their deep roots dozens of meters underground in search of groundwater.

You can also climb Big Mama dune, since Sossusvlei lies at its foot. Once you reach the ridge, you’ll get a stunning panoramic view of the whole valley and the river. Sossusvlei is also an ideal spot to see some of the desert’s wildlife thanks to its vegetation, such as oryx.

Flora and fauna of the Namib Desert

At first glance, the Namib Desert might look like a barren, empty territory, but it holds astonishing biodiversity. Over millions of years of uninterrupted evolution, its plants and animals have developed survival techniques unique in the animal kingdom that defy logic.

Plants adapted to an extreme climate

The vegetation of the Namib Desert has learned to survive without relying on rainfall. Instead, it makes the most of the morning fog rolling in from the Atlantic Ocean. One example is the Welwitschia mirabilis, the country’s national plant and one of the strangest organisms in the world. It’s considered a living fossil, since it can live for more than 1,500 years.

Acacia trees are, of course, another example. We can find them both alive, in Sossusvlei, and already mummified, in Deadvlei. The living ones extend their roots into the subsoil to record depths (which can exceed 60 meters) in search of underground aquifers.

Oryx, springboks and other mammals

The mammals of the Namib Desert defy the heat by regulating their own body temperature and making the most of every drop of water in their bodies. The oryx, an imposing antelope with long, straight horns, does that and much more. It’s not only the national animal, but also the undisputed king of the dunes.

It can go months without drinking water directly, getting all its hydration from roots and succulent plants. It even has a unique cooling system in the blood vessels of its nose that keeps its brain from overheating when its body temperature rises above 40 ºC — incredible, right?

Gazelles

With luck, you might also spot springbok, or gazelles, which survive thanks to a selective diet, feeding at night or before dawn during periods of severe drought, when the plants absorb moisture from the fog.

Along the desert’s margins and in dry riverbeds, you can also spot black-backed jackals, brown hyenas, and meerkats, which shelter in deep underground burrows. country’s capital, or from Swakopmund or Walvis Bay.

How to get around the area

Most travelers choose to rent a car and explore the desert independently. In that case, it’s best to rent a high-clearance SUV or a 4×4 off-roader. Although the roads within the park are in good condition, the secondary roads that lead to Sesriem aren’t as well maintained and could damage a regular passenger car.

Entry into the park at Sesriem has a daily fee that you’ll need to pay before entering. Once inside, you’ll also need to leave your car at the first parking area, from where you can reach many of the must-see attractions.

How many days to spend

Travelers usually set aside one day and two nights for the most important areas of the Namib Desert we’ve mentioned (Sesriem, Deadvlei, and Sossusvlei). The first day is for arriving at the settlement and taking care of the paperwork needed to sort out entry permits.

You can spend all of day two enjoying the park, and day three will be your departure toward your next destination in Namibia. That said, some travelers add an extra day to see certain spots or take specific excursions.

Where to stay

You can stay inside the park (recommended if you want to make the most of the daylight hours, since it lets you go through the gate an hour before sunrise). Outside the park is where you’ll find the best value-for-money options. These are located just a few kilometers from the outer fence, and you’ll need to wait for the first gate to open before entering.

Best time to visit the Namib Desert

Climate throughout the year

Namibia’s winter is dry and runs from May to October. At night, however, temperatures drop sharply, and the thermometer can come close to 0 ºC before dawn.

As for summer, it runs from November to April and is very hot, easily surpassing 40 ºC in the shade. It’s the perfect window for tackling the demanding hikes across the sand without suffering too much from the heat. Keep in mind, though, that this is high season in the country, so it’s essential to book trips, activities, and accommodations at least 6 months in advance.

As for time of day, it’s best to set out for the dunes at sunrise and enjoy the place during the first two hours of daylight. Later, in the afternoon, the last two hours before sunset also offer beautiful light and vivid ochre tones.

When to avoid the highest temperatures

You should avoid being out on the dunes and open valleys between 11:00 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. During these midday hours, the sun burns intensely and also flattens the landscape’s relief, making photos far less striking.

Tips for visiting the Namib Desert

Bring plenty of water throughout your visit.
