Centuries ago, the area was flooded by the Tsauchab River, which gave life to the acacia trees. But when the climate changed and the dunes blocked the water’s path, the trees began to die.

However, the climate quickly became extremely arid and dry, which meant the acacia wood didn’t rot but instead was scorched by the sun and underwent a kind of mummification. They’ve been mummified for around 900 years, and their deep black color contrasts with the white and reddish tones around them.

The Contrast Between the White Clay and the Red Dunes

Because of Deadvlei’s extreme dryness, the white clay ground cracks, giving the impression that it’s broken into a thousand pieces. That white color contrasts with the ochre-red of the surrounding dunes, a shade produced by the iron oxide present in the sand.

The whole Deadvlei landscape looks like it’s straight out of a painting, as if someone had painted it by hand.

Big Daddy and Big Mama

Big Daddy is the tallest dune in Deadvlei. To visit it, you’ll have no choice but to pass through Sesriem, a small town that serves as the gateway to the national park where Deadvlei is located.

Sesriem is where the park’s ticket office is, and where you’ll have to pay the entrance fee. There’s no other road, path, or alternative entrance to reach the valley.

Sesriem is also where the only accommodations outside the desert are concentrated. Because of this, it’s very common to spend the night here before your visit to the park.

How to Get to Deadvlei from Sesriem

From the gates of Sesriem to Deadvlei there are about 65 kilometers full of adventure and contrasts. You can cover this stretch either on your own in a rental car or by joining an organized excursion. However, the first option has a few things you should keep in mind.

From Sesriem you can drive yourself freely toward Deadvlei, but only as far as the 2×4 parking area (that is, the first 60 kilometers). That’s where the paved, straight, well-signposted road turns into a soft sand track. By regulation, you’ll have to leave your car there and board one of the park’s authorized trucks, which will take you to the entrance of Deadvlei.

Private 4×4 vehicles used to be allowed to drive this stretch, but it caused a lot of traffic jams and environmental impact. Now you’ll need to pay between 180 and 200 Namibian dollars per person for the round trip from the parking area to Deadvlei. So bring cash to buy the pass at the parking lot ticket booths.

The shuttle will drop you off at another parking area, and from there the only way into Deadvlei is on foot. Although there are no marked trails, since the wind would erase them, there are white posts stuck in the sand that guide the way.

How Much Time to Spend on the Visit

Once at Deadvlei, it’s best to spend between one and two hours there walking among the acacias and taking photos. That said, if you decide to climb Big Daddy before heading down to the valley, add an extra hour and a half to your itinerary, since the climb is very demanding because of the sand.

In total, counting the road trip from Sesriem, the full activity of visiting Deadvlei and its immediate surroundings can take you about 4 to 5 hours.

Opening Hours and Park Access

The national park where Deadvlei is located is heavily protected, and opening hours change every month depending on daylight hours. To understand this, you should know that Sesriem has two different gates:

The outer gate. This is the one used by those staying outside the park. It opens at first light and closes strictly at sunset. If you’re staying at hotels outside the national park, you’ll have to queue at the gate before dawn, since you won’t be allowed through until the sun starts to rise over the horizon.

The inner gate. This is for those staying inside the park. It opens one hour before sunrise and closes one hour after sunset. It’s located about 500 meters past the outer gate and can only be used by those spending the night at authorized accommodations in the intermediate zone between the two gates (such as Sesriem Campsite or Dead Valley Lodge, for example).

As for access, you’re required to pay a daily conservation fee, managed by the Namibian government. Currently, fees run around 150 Namibian dollars per adult and 100 Namibian dollars for children between 9 and 16 years old (children under 9 can enter for free).

You can pay the entrance fee at the main building of the visitor center in Sesriem. />

Technically, the park is open all day (from sunrise to sunset), so nothing stops you from starting the route at two in the afternoon, for example. However, the middle of the day is the least advisable time, since the valley’s white clay acts like a giant mirror that reflects the intense sun and can cause heatstroke or dehydration in visitors.

Also, at midday, when the sun is directly overhead, the shadows cast by the dunes and trees disappear, and the sand loses its distinctive orange color.

That’s why the best time to visit Deadvlei is at sunrise. Besides cooler temperatures and cleaner air, this is the only time of day when the interplay of shadows that so defines this environment takes place. The light hits at an angle and creates an incredible effect on the dunes and on the black silhouettes of the acacias.

From around 10:30 am, this effect starts to fade as the sun takes over and turns the valley into a heat mirror, so it’s not recommended to stay in Deadvlei past 11 in the morning. To give you an idea, in the milder months, temperatures reach between 25°C and 30°C, but in summer they easily exceed 40°C and can approach 50°C.

Best Time of Year to Travel

The park is open 365 days a year, but the best time to visit is without a doubt from May to October. This coincides with Namibia’s dry winter, when you’ll find clearer skies, much more bearable daytime temperatures, and drier air. This is obviously peak season, so it’s very important to book your trip and reserve accommodation in Sesriem well in advance (more than six months ahead, believe it or not).

Tips for Visiting Deadvlei

One of the golden rules for any traveler visiting Deadvlei in Namibia is to sleep in the intermediate zone between the two gates (known as sleeping inside the park). This lets you reach Deadvlei earlier and arrive at the foot of the dunes right as the sun starts to rise, so you can enjoy the most magical light of the day without the crowds coming from outside.

Another great trick is to buy your entry permit the afternoon before. This way you’ll avoid the huge lines that usually form in the morning at the office and can head straight to the park gate on the day of your visit.

During the drive to the 2×4 parking area you’ll be able to spot oryx and ostriches, and you’ll even pass by the famous Dune 45, the most photographed dune in all of Namibia.

If you plan to climb the Big Daddy dune, don’t complete the last stretch on foot following the white posts. From there, you can run down the slope and land right in the middle of the valley.

There is only one legal and safe way to visit Deadvlei in the afternoon, and that’s by staying inside the park, since the inner gate closes one hour after sunset. This gives you time to watch the sun set behind the dunes. In this case, I recommend leaving Sesriem at 3:30 pm, when the heat starts to ease, being in Deadvlei from 4:50 pm to 5:45 pm, and heading back at 5:45 pm, before the sun fully sets.

More tips

Bring plenty of water, since there are no shops or fountains along the way.
