id="How-to-get-to-Isla-de-la-Juventud">How to get to Isla de la Juventud?

One of the most important aspects of planning your trip is knowing how to get to Isla de la Juventud. Currently, there are two main ways to get there: by air or by sea.

The fastest option is to take a flight from Havana to Nueva Gerona, the capital of Isla de la Juventud. Cubana de Aviación operates regular flights, although it is highly recommended to book in advance and confirm the schedules, as these may vary. Nueva Gerona Airport is only 5 kilometres from this small town.

The cheapest and most popular option, although also the slowest, is the ferry from the port of Batabanó, south of Havana. The best way to get to Batabanó is by taxi or train from the Cuban capital. The journey from the port to the island takes between 2.5 and 5 hours, depending on the type of boat. Many travellers choose to hire a vehicle to get there. If that’s the case, here’s a guide to car hire in Cuba: tips and where to hire.

There are also traditional ferries and faster catamarans, but in both cases it is important to take something for seasickness, as the sea is often quite rough.

Main places of interest on the Isle of Youth

The Isle of Youth is a paradise of contrasts. It has exotic beaches, pre-Columbian caves, historic ruins and spectacular seabeds. Here you can also try some of the 10 typical Cuban dishes prepared with homemade recipes in private homes or small local restaurants.
