It is a large space that is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this square you can find <strong>different buildings<\/strong>, which were the first colonial-style dwellings in the whole country. You can see the<strong> town hall and the cathedral<\/strong>, as well as other buildings of great architectural value. Its most symbolic feature is the <strong>statue in honour of Christopher Columbus<\/strong>, located right in the centre of the square. It has <strong>great historical importance<\/strong>, as it was the place where the national flag was raised in 1844 as an act of the Republic&#8217;s independence. This architectural jewel is located at the mouth of the Ozama River and is a World Heritage Site.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This structure was built between 1502 and 1507, so it looks like a medieval castle to a certain extent. Its main objective was to defend the city from conquerors, but over time it has undergone numerous transformations until it reached the fa\u00e7ade we can see today. The fortress is<strong> made up of different constructions<\/strong>, including the Torre de Homenaje (Homage Tower) and the statue of Gonzalo Fern\u00e1ndez de Oviedo. You can&#8217;t miss a visit to this fortress, which is one of the oldest buildings in Santo Domingo Dominican Republic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"museum-of-the-royal-houses\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Museum-of-the-Royal-Houses\"><\/span>Museum of the Royal Houses<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>As in any trip, you cannot miss a visit to the<strong> most famous museum in the city<\/strong>. In the case of Santo Domingo, we are talking about the impressive Museo de las Casas Reales. This building was built in the 16th century and is located right in the centre of the city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It has a really striking fa\u00e7ade, with <strong>a characteristic Elizabethan Gothic and Renaissance style<\/strong>. On the main wall, you can see the only coat of arms in the world of Queen Juana la Loca. Once you have visited the outside of the museum, you can go inside and stroll around its two floors and different galleries. Each of them has <strong>different collections<\/strong>, the most important of which are the many objects from the colonial period. This impressive structure built in 1852, honours, as its name suggests, Christopher Columbus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Its fa\u00e7ade is made up of <strong>a cross<\/strong> on one side and a <strong>huge Mayan pyramid <\/strong>on the other. Once you have finished admiring its exterior, go inside to see the<strong> exhibitions on different Latin American countries<\/strong>. Inside you can also find several rooms, such as the Ceramiology and Iconography Museum, the Archaeological Museum, and even a library. One of its most characteristic features is that, on some nights, it projects an illumination of a huge cross in the sky, visible from several kilometres away. A truly impressive spectacle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"cathedral-of-santo-domingo\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Cathedral-of-Santo-Domingo\"><\/span>Cathedral of Santo Domingo<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The Catedral Primada de Am\u00e9rica, also known as the Cathedral of Santo Domingo, was <strong>the first cathedral built in the Americas <\/strong>and therefore of holds immense historical value. Having been built in 1512, some design features were influenced by Seville Cathedral.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This impressive monument was created in honour of Santa Mar\u00eda de la Encarnaci\u00f3n. Its has Gothic architecture with some <strong>Renaissance decorations<\/strong>. A true visual marvel. Once you have walked around the outside, you can enter the cathedral and discover an amazing set of works and decorations, such as the table of the Virgin of Altagracia, or the main altar.
