Things to see in Geneva
Jet d’Eau
The Jet d’Eau has to be at the top of your list of things to see in Geneva. This huge jet, visible from almost anywhere in the city, reaches a height of 140 metres, spouting a stream of water at over 200 kilometres per hour.
You can find it on the Eaux Vives jetty, a true visual spectacle. In 1886, it was used as a safety valve in a hydroelectric power network; years later, in 1891, it was moved to become the tourist attraction it is today. It is one of the largest water fountains in the world and a spot you can miss on your trip!
Palace of Nations
Geneva is considered Switzerland’s most international city, mainly because it is home to the Palais des Nations. This is why the city’s nickname ,”City of Peace”, is not in vain.
Geneva, mainly due to its superb central location in Europe, has been at the centre of numerous peaceful and humanitarian actions. Home to four UN world headquarters, you can’t miss a visit to this impressive palace designed by the famous architect Le Corbusier. You’ll find it on the Place des Nations, where you can also visit the Red Crescent and the International Red Cross Museum, both government buildings. Don’t forget to bring your camera.
- How to get to the Palais des Nations? To get to the Palais des Nations from the centre of Geneva, take number 15 bus, get off at the Nations stop, and walk 6 minutes to the Palais. The journey takes about 20 minutes. You can also walk, although it will take you 40 minutes on foot.
St. Pierre Cathedral
Geneva Cathedral, better known as St. Pierre’s Cathedral, is an imposing religious temple dating back to the 12th century and has great historical importance in the Swiss city. It began as a Catholic church, but thanks to the arrival of Martin Luther the church was converted to Protestantism.
This cathedral creates an authentic visual experience for architecture lovers, who will be able to admire its spectacular neoclassical style, seen in its columns and interiors. We recommend going inside to see its greatest treasure: a centuries-old wooden chair that was allegedly used by John Calvin.
- What are the opening hours of the cathedral? St. Pierre’s Cathedral is open daily from 10:00 to 19:30.
- How much does it cost to enter St. Pierre’s Cathedral? Entrance to the cathedral is completely free, but if you want to climb the top of the tower to get a panoramic view of the city, you have to pay a fee of €4.61.
Carouge Neighbourhood
The Carouge district is a favourite neighbourhood amongst locals and travellers alike. Not only is it close to the historic centre of Geneva, but it also has a completely unique atmosphere. Come and see why!
This neighbourhood is also known as the Italian quarter of Geneva, as it has a distinctive Mediterranean style that has previously been compared to Nice. It was designed by Italian architects who were hired by the Dukes of Savoy, the former owners of Carouge. Here you can enjoy the lively atmosphere, as well as the iconic St-Joseph street, full of colourful umbrellas. It is definitely the ideal place to stroll around Geneva Switzerland.
Jardin Anglais
The Jardin Anglais is one of the most important natural areas in Geneva, next to the famous Lake Geneva. It is the perfect place to spend a relaxing day in the middle of nature, with the option of preparing a picnic and enjoying it with friends or family.
Before leaving the park, you can’t miss a visit to its most symbolic feature: the famous Flower Clock, or Horloge Fleurie, a monument that honours Switzerland’s famous clock industry. Make sure to take lots of photos of this huge clock, which is filled with colourful flowers and is five metres in diameter. You’ll love it!
The Broken Chair
The Broken Chair is one of the most significant things to see in Geneva, not only for its peculiar structure and design, but also for the message behind it. This monument is a 12-metre-high sculpture designed by Daniel Berset, a renowned Swiss artist.
Its message is in keeping with its location, as it has stood in front of the Palais des Nations since 1997. It is an attempt to raise awareness in society about the rejection of bombs and anti-personnel mines. It is well worth a visit.
Parc des Bastions
The Parc des Bastions, also known in English as the Bastions Park, is one of the most beautiful parks in Geneva. Located at the foot of the historic centre, it is a favourite spot among locals, especially young people due to its proximity to the university.
Besides being the ideal place to spend a morning or afternoon strolling around or simply enjoying the peace and quiet, in this park you will find two symbolic monuments: on the one hand, there are the giant chessboards, where you will see daily games with large-scale pieces. On the other hand, you can admire the Reformation Wall, stretching out over 100 metres, honouring the creation of Protestantism. Make sure to visit this very interesting park.
See Geneva’s Historic Centre
The historic centre or Old Town is one of the best parts of Geneva. As well as being the largest in Switzerland, it’s where you’ll find most of the city’s monuments and landmarks.
We recommend dedicating a whole morning or afternoon to discover its charms, from the pleasant and busy little streets to its most important aspects. You can see places such as the Museum of Art and History, which we recommend visiting if you have time, St. Pierre’s Cathedral, the Treille Promenade, the Calvin College or the Tavel House, which is now a museum. In the old town you will also find some of the best places to have lunch or dinner, as well as many little shops and places to have a drink. It will certainly become your favourite area in Geneva!
