Things to see and do in Eger, Hungary
Eger Castle
We couldn’t start any other way than by talking about the town’s main attraction: its castle. Its privileged position offers beautiful views of everything there is to see in Eger, so a visit here is not to be missed.
Erected in the 13th century, during the reign of Stephen I, this castle served as a fortress from which to defend against outside attacks. In fact, the castle was the site of a very important historical event for the locals, in which they resisted an invasion by Ottoman forces for over a month.
It can be visited inside and although it is in ruins, there are still remnants of what it once was, making it an excellent visit for history buffs. Inside there are various exhibitions on local history and other topics, so don’t miss the opportunity to see this impressive monument on your visit to Eger.
Dobó Square
This square is the main centre of Eger, where all the activity is concentrated. Here, the locals enjoy the leisure activities the city has to offer. There are several places where you can sample the wines on offer from the extensive vineyards that surround the city of Eger.
In the centre of the square, there is a sculpture of István Dobó, the historical figure after whom the square is named and who was a renowned captain who defended the city from the Ottoman invasion centuries ago.
In addition to all this, there is also a very emblematic church, called the Minorite Church and next to it is the town hall, which was built in the late 19th century and is a must-see in the city of Eger.
The Basilica of Eger
As is customary in Hungary and cities such as Budapest, in Eger you’ll also find architectural heritage that looks like something out of a novel.
The Eger Basilica is a fine example of this, with its imposing yellow façade and the sculptures that watch over it from the roof. It is the second-largest church in the country.
Built in the late 19th century, the interior of this church is no slouch either, as all the paintings inside, along with the main organ, make the visit all the more memorable.
In addition to all of the above, there is a wine cellar on the lower floor. You can visit it any day, for a price of less than €1 at the currency exchange rate.
The Minaret of Eger
Minaret is the name given to the towers of a mosque, and this minaret is a reminder of the time when the Ottoman Empire dominated this territory.
It is one of the oldest remaining in Europe, if not the oldest, and is preserved in an enviable state despite having been built in the 17th century.
Although it has lost its religious use today, it has not lost the appeal of the spectacular views it offers from the top: it is an ideal place to take your panoramic views of the city, along with Eger Castle.
But be prepared for the walk, as it’s a very narrow tower and has a few steps up to the best point. The effort will pay off, don’t worry, and it only costs about €1 to get in.
The Minorite Church
As mentioned above, you’ll find the Minorite Church on Dobó Square. There is certainly a lot to see in this church in Eger, which is why it deserves a separate mention.
It was built in the 18th century and has a unique façade, with its curved shape and splendid 57-metre-high towers. But that’s not the most impressive thing about it.
Most striking and memorable is its interior, with awe-inspiring ceiling frescoes painted by Bratislavan Márton Reindl shortly after the church was built.
And its main altar and the marble columns that guard it, along with the sculptures of various religious figures, add the finishing touch to this must-see spot on your route through Eger.
The Valley of the Beautiful Women
With this curious name, this cluster of wineries is the most recognizable spot in the city where you can sample the full range of wines that Eger has to offer.
Away from the city centre, about half an hour’s walkaway, this quiet corner of Eger is home to numerous restaurants and entertainment venues, all of which focus their activity on wine.
But in addition to that, the visit is worthwhile also for the typical houses of the area, which have cellars prepared to properly preserve the product.
Don’t miss the opportunity to attend a wine tasting, so you can enjoy the wine and the local gastronomy, while watching the scenery of Eger.
Enjoy the thermal baths of Eger, Hungary
We think that the best way to end your day in the beautiful city of Eger is by enjoying the famous hot springs of the Eger Turkish Bath.
As you may know, hot springs are common in Hungary and Eger is no different. Spas with thermal baths abound in the southern part of the city, and there are even playgrounds for the little ones.
We recommend you try this experience, as taking a relaxing bath in the open air, while overlooking the fields and hills of Eger, is the best way to end your tour of the city.
