5. Al-Azhar Mosque


The Al-Azhar Mosque, located in the heart of Cairo’s Old City, is another of the city’s architectural gems and an important centre of Islamic learning.

Founded in 971, it is one of the oldest mosques in the world and one of the most prestigious academic institutions in Islam. Its beautiful architecture features a mix of styles, from Fatimid design to Mamluk elements, such as the minaret, and Ottoman, such as your main door. Inside, you will find a magnificent prayer hall, quiet courtyards and a library with a vast collection of Islamic books. The mosque is also home to Al-Azhar University, founded in 975. What to see around Cairo?

1. Giza Pyramids, a must-see near Cairo

If you travel to Cairo, the main visit you must make is to the famous, majestic and ancient Pyramids of Giza. Giza is located on the outskirts of Cairo, about 40 minutes by car. Giza is one of the must-see places to visit in Egypt, making it one of the most popular tourist destinations in the country.

Of the three majestic pyramids, Keops is undoubtedly the largest and most important. It was built by order of the pharaoh Cheops around 2570 BC. Nowadays, the summit has eroded and its ancient white or pink limestone covering has also disappeared. Nevertheless, it remains an enigmatic and fascinating construction.

The Great Sphinx is believed to represent the lion-bodied Pharaoh Khafre. It could also be a lion-bodied guardian to represent strength and wisdom in Ancient Egypt. This 57-metre long and 21-metre high statue has become a recognisable symbol for everyone. It is undoubtedly one of the most impressive sights to see in Egypt.

What should I know before a trip to Cairo?

  • The official currency of Egypt is the Egyptian Pound (EGP).

Cairo has a hot desert climate, with extremely hot summers and mild winters. Summers have temperatures that can exceed 40°C during the day. Nights are warm but more pleasant. Autumn is a pleasant season, with milder temperatures ranging between 20-30°C. Winters are mild, with daytime temperatures hovering around 15-20ºC. At night, temperatures drop to 7-13ºC. Finally, spring has mild temperatures, ranging from 20°C in March to 35°C in June.

How to get to Cairo?

The most common way to get to Cairo is through Cairo International Airport. Many international airlines offer direct flights to Cairo from all over the world. Once at the airport, you can reach the centre of Cairo by taxi, private transfer services, bus or metro.
From other parts of Egypt, Cairo can be reached by bus or train. There are regular connections from cities such as Luxor, Aswan and Alexandria.

How to get around in Cairo?

Cairo is a rather chaotic city and getting around is not always easy, especially due to traffic. We recommend planning your travel in advance.
The Cairo Metro is one of the fastest and most convenient ways to get around the city, especially in areas with congested traffic. Taxis are a common option, but be sure to negotiate the price before you get in or use the meter to ensure a fair fare. Another option is to use Uber or Careem.
