Pinar del Río is a region of Cuba famous for its rich tradition of tobacco production and its impressive natural landscapes, such as the Viñales Valley, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Ready to embark on your trip to Pinar del Rio?

1. Prepare the documentation to travel to Pinar del Río

As you may know, depending on where you’re travelling from, the documentation required to enter the country may vary slightly. What is common, regardless of where you’re coming from, is that you’ll need to apply for a tourist visa that will allow you to stay in the country for 90 days with the possibility of extending it for a further 30 days. There are two types of visas depending on where you are travelling from, the Pink Visa if you travel from the United States, and the Green or Blue Visa for all other countries.

Both can be applied for at the Cuban embassy or consulate in your country or on their website. To apply, you must present a copy of your passport valid for at least six months from the start of your trip and travel insurance, as well as paying the corresponding fees, which vary depending on the country of origin. If you travel from the USA the visa costs $103, while from Europe it costs $35.

Once granted, the visa is valid for 6 months, which means that, depending on how long you plan to stay in the country, we don’t recommend applying for it too far in advance. In this post you can read more about visas to Cuba: Travel visas to Cuba: How to obtain a visa to travel to Cuba.

Something important to keep in mind is that if you decide to travel from the US, you will have to request authorisation from the Office of Foreign Assets Control and prepare certain extra documents as we tell you in this post: What do I need to travel to Cuba from the United States?

2. Choose the date to plan your trip to Pinar del Rio

We recommend visiting Pinar del Río between November and April, outside the rainy season. During these months temperatures are optimal for strolling through the tobacco fields and swimming at the beach. The downside is that this is also the high season, and there are more tourists and prices can be higher.

However, if you want an authentic local experience, we encourage you to go during the Festival del Habano, an event for cigar aficionados where you can sample top-notch cigars and learn about Cuban cigar culture.

3. Find out how to get to Pinar del Rio

Getting to Pinar del Río and getting around the region is quite easy, especially if you’re coming from Havana, which is about 2 hours away by car. Here are all the options for getting there:

The gastronomy in Pinar del Río is a reflection of Cuba’s cultural diversity, influenced by Spanish, African, Chinese and Arabic roots. Local dishes are famous for the use of fresh ingredients such as pork, chicken, cassava and various seafood, often accompanied by rice and beans, essential elements of the Cuban diet. You’re sure not to go hungry.

Here are a few suggestions of dishes not to be missed:

  1. Congrí: a combination of rice and black beans cooked and seasoned with garlic, pepper and other spices. It is a classic side dish in Cuban cuisine and is known for its robust flavour and pleasant texture.

  4. Yucca with mojito: yucca, a potato-like tuber, is cooked until soft and served with a “mojito” (not to be confused with the cocktail), which is a sauce made from olive oil, garlic, lime juice and sometimes onion. This dish stands out for its smooth texture and the acidic and aromatic touch of the mojito.
  5. Tamales en hojas: ground corn mixed with pieces of meat (usually pork), wrapped in corn husks and steamed.
