Tortuguero National Park

Tortuguero National Park, founded in 1975, is one of the most biologically diverse wilderness areas in Costa Rica, covering an area of up to 26,156 hectares. This park was created to protect the flora and fauna of this region, mainly the most important nesting area of the green turtle in the western Caribbean. It was also created to facilitate research, scientific studies and environmental education.

There are three distinct wildlife zones: very humid tropical forest, premontane moist forest transitioning to basal and tropical rainforest. Eleven habitats have been identified, as well as 2000 plant species and 400 tree species. The canals are full of unique species as well, such as the West Indian manatee, monkeys, river otters, and more than 50 species of freshwater fish.
